In towns and villages across Wiltshire, hundreds of people are now taking part in joint efforts to tackle climate change. Through action on energy efficiency, transport, local food and waste minimisation, they are all hoping to reduce their collective CO2 emissions and work towards greener, healthier, happier lifestyles for everyone in their community.
Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Climate Friendly Communities programme saw the setting up of groups all over the county.
In Bradford-on-Avon, an Open Doors event showcased solar-powered homes, sunflower-powered vans, and a wealth of delicious local and organic food and drink, in the launch of Climate Friendly Bradford. Last year the group held an eco trade fair which was very well attended. In Ramsbury and Axford, a launch event strongly featured a wealth of local food. Colerne has held two Sustainability Days attracting as many as 1,000 people. Marlborough Climate Pledge has held two climate days and last Christmas sent a Christmas card to Gordon Brown urging him to make the climate change bill law. Other communities getting active for the climate include Steeple Langford, Purton and the pioneers who started it all off , Urchfont.
The Climate Friendly project has now finished but the work goes on. New groups are taking up the challenge with Devizes, Pewsey and Cricklade taking the first steps.
