A plastic bag free Wiltshire?

On January 1st 2008, Tisbury moved to remove free plastic bags from local shops and to encourage residents to make use of traditional reusable bags. The local shops agreed to support the effort and cotton bags were offered for sale. The event was very successful and the impact on local shopping has been sustained. More towns and villages in the county would like to follow suit and Melksham was next to begin a campaign with its “Love your Planet” day on Valentines day. The Climate Friendly Melksham Group has put together an information pack for local traders and plans to provide fairly traded cotton bags for sale to residents. Others are also planning to tackle this problem.

Melksham has made its information pack available to the World Changers Network for others to use if they so wish. If any other group has begun a campaign and would be willing to share their ideas please let us know by contacting the network on worldchangers@wiltshirewildlife.org.

Plastic bags are not the biggest problem to be tackled in the face of climate change but they are a problem for wildlife worldwide, they create a significant litter problem and the plastic breaks down into tiny fragments that join the food chain.

If you think that a concerted effort by Wiltshire groups to cut the use of the single use plastic bag is a good idea, get in touch and we will chart our progress to a plastic bag free Wiltshire. You can download Melksham's notes by clicking the link.
